Marty Smith
FCPS Chief of Staff
Marty Smith became the Chief of Staff in 2014 and provides administrative and strategic leadership and support for the superintendent’s initiatives and priorities, working closely with the other chief positions, assistant superintendents, government relations, and the Office of Communication and Community Relations. He coordinates FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement which supports high quality teaching and learning.
Prior to the chief of staff position, Smith served as assistant superintendent for Cluster 1, where he provided instructional leadership for 22 schools and leadership development for 70 school-based administrators. Previously, he served as Cluster 1 director where he monitored student achievement for all schools in the cluster and had the responsibility for developing and implementing service learning programs for the school district. Smith has served as principal of Franklin Sherman Elementary School, assistant principal of Lane Elementary School and Graham Road Elementary School, as a Pathways to Leadership administrative intern at Graham Road Elementary School, and a classroom teacher at Flint Hill Elementary School. He earned his Master of Arts degree in education leadership from George Mason University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of Iowa.
In February 2018, Mr. Smith assumed the Chief Operating Officer position where he oversees the Departments of Information Technology, Facilities and Transportation, and Financial Services and continues his oversight of Government Relations and Office of Research and Strategic Improvement.
